Phosphat (Pi) ist ein wesentlicher Bestandteil des Lebens. In biologischen Systemen wird Phosphor als freies Phosphation in Lösung gefunden und als anorganisches Phosphat bezeichnet, um es von Phosphaten zu unterscheiden, die in verschiedenen Phosphatestern gebunden sind. Anorganisches Phosphat wird allgemein als Pi bezeichnet und besteht bei physiologischem (neutralem) pH hauptsächlich aus einer Mischung von HPO2-4- und H2PO-4-Ionen. Phosphate kommen am häufigsten in Form von Adenosinphosphaten (58317530, AMP, ADP und ATP) sowie in DNA und RNA vor und können durch Hydrolyse von ATP oder ADP freigesetzt werden. Ähnliche Reaktionen existieren für die anderen Nucleosiddiphosphate und Triphosphate.
